Obese, postmenopausal women are at greater risk for developing breast cancer and their cancers tend to be more aggressive than those in lean counterparts. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published in the December issue of the journal Cancer Research shows how this risk might be prevented.

"By using nutrient tracers for fat and sugar, we tracked where the body stored excess calories. In lean models, excess fat and glucose were taken up by the liver, mammary and skeletal tissues. In obese models, excess fat and glucose were taken up by tumors, fueling their growth," says Erin Giles, PhD, postdoctoral researcher at the CU Cancer Center and the paper's lead author.

In short, if you are lean, excess calories go to healthy tissue. If you are obese, excess calories feed the tumor.

"This implies that the menopausal window may be an opportunity for women to control their breast cancer risk through weight management," Giles says.

In this study, Giles worked with a team of scientists including postdoctoral fellows Elizabeth Wellberg and Sonali Jindal, as well as faculty members Steve Anderson, Pepper Schedin, Ann Thor and Paul Maclean. Their study also showed that tumors from obese animals had increased levels of the progesterone receptor, and this receptor appears to give tumors a metabolic advantage for growth. To extend their findings to humans, they recruited gene analysis experts David Astling and Aik-Choon Tan who analyzed 585 human breast cancers and found that human tumors expressing the progesterone receptor had the same metabolic advantage.

"Basically, we saw an abnormal metabolic response to fat and sugar in the obese that, in many ways, mirrors the response to fat and sugar in Type II diabetes," Giles says. Noticing this similarity, the group tested the use of the common Type II diabetes drug, Metformin, in their model of postmenopausal breast cancer.

"With treatment, tumor size was dramatically decreased in the obese, and tumors showed reduced expression of the progesterone receptor," Giles says.

Using a pre-clinical model, the investigators found that weight gain during menopause is particularly bad for those who are obese when entering menopause. Together, the results of this study suggest that the combination of obesity and weight gain during menopause can impact breast cancer in two ways. First, tumors that arise in obese women appear to have a metabolic advantage, and second, the inability to store excess calories in healthy tissues may further fuel tumor growth.

"While drugs may be useful in controlling breast cancer risk in obese, postmenopausal women, our results imply that a combination of diet and exercise may be equally if not more beneficial," Giles says.

The group's ongoing studies are testing whether interventions such as diet and exercise, during the period of menopausal weight gain, can improve tumor outcomes.

Researchers Investigate 'Healthy' Obesity Gene

'Researchers Investigate 'Healthy' Obesity Gene'
1 starnot yet rated
Why is it that some obese people are healthier than others? This was one of the main questions Dr. Chaodong Wu of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences - Texas A&M University System - and a group of researchers tried to answer in a recent study.

The study, which will appear in a July issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, used genetically modified mice to investigate the genetic aspects of why some obese people do not develop certain medical problems typically associated with obesity, especially Type 2 diabetes.

Wu noted that Xin Guo, a Ph.D. candidate in the college's department of nutrition and food sciences, contributed significantly to the study.

"Previous research had indicated that a regulatory enzyme which is encoded by the gene PFKFB3 protects against diet-induced fat tissue inflammation and systemic insulin resistance," said Wu, who also has a Texas AgriLife Research appointment. "Increasing evidence shows that fat deposition, or amount, is not directly associated with the inflammation or insulin resistance in the development of obesity-related metabolic diseases."

Wu said the inducible 6-phosphorofructo-2-kinase (iPFK2) enzyme links metabolic and inflammatory responses and may underlie what he refers to as "healthy" obesity.

"While many obese people develop Type 2 diabetes, heart conditions and other chronic health problems associated with being significantly overweight, other obese people do not," he said. "And while obesity in general is not healthy, some obese people do not develop the diseases more commonly associated with a less-than-healthy diet. Furthermore, a number of thinner people may have the sort of health problems more typically associated with obesity."

Wu said he and the other researchers theorized that these diseases are associated with the cellular inflammatory response brought on by obesity.

"We also thought this gene could conceivably be targeted for use in the treatment of diabetes, especially Type 2, commonly associated with obesity," he said. "We wanted to find out what might happen to a subject if that particular gene was activated."

Wu and his fellow researchers used laboratory mice to explore the effect of a targeted adipocyte overexpression of the gene/enzyme combination on diet-induced inflammatory responses and insulin sensitivity.

"We were trying to find out what it is in adipose, or fat, tissue that may trigger a negative response that leads to disease - and how to modulate that response," he said. "In our study, we learned overexpression of the iPFK2 enzyme increases fat deposition, suppresses inflammatory responses and improves insulin sensitivity in both adipose and live tissues."

As an extension of this research, Wu said, it may be possible to identify a pharmacological agent or bioactive agent which may have the desired effect on this gene toward reducing obesity-related cellular inflammatory response.

"We're hoping that, as one of its outcomes, this research will help lead to finding bioactive compounds or some type of supplement that might be taken to help activate this gene toward the promotion of health," he said. "It would also be a good idea to compare and contrast this research with studies done on what constitutes a healthy diet and the effect of such a diet at a cellular level. "

Wu said that would allow for screening bioactive compounds in a healthy diet to determine to what degree these might be applicable for the treatment of disease brought on by unhealthy obesity in an animal model.

"As a further extension, one might study different types of obese people and try to isolate additional specific genes that determine a healthy versus an unhealthy obesity and find a way to modulate the expression of those genes toward disease prevention and health promotion," he said. "Once you find the link between the gene and the obese status of the individual, then you could work with experts in chemical research to produce or replicate whatever pharmacological or bioactive compound is needed to treat unhealthy obesity."

Wu said it is important to determine positively to what degree obesity as a health problem is due to a person's genetic makeup as it relates to their ability to store fat, as well as what type of fat - saturated or non-saturated - the individual may store.

"Fat composition is more important than fat deposition, or content," he said. "We know fat cells secrete some of their own bioactive compounds that we may be able to isolate and identify for use in promoting health."

Wu said it will be necessary to discover the role of certain genes in the composition and deposition of fats beyond what has already been identified as being stored in the adipose tissue of mice.

"Then we may be able to produce a dietary supplement or other bioactive compound that would have a positive health effect," he said. "This could be used as a targeted treatment for obesity-related diseases such as Type 2 diabetes in a way that would have limited or minimal side effects."

What the Heck Is Healthy (or Gano or Ganoderma or Reishi) Coffee?

If you drink coffee, here's something that you may be interested in: a healthier coffee!

Coffee is the most consumed beverage on the planet and is the second-most traded commodity on the stock exchanges, after oil, and more and more people are getting into the coffee business as distributors and affiliates.

And, as I said, the market is huge.

There are over 108 million coffee consumers in the United States making coffee consumption $50 billion-a-year.

The dietary supplement industry sales total $20 billion-a-year.

The health and wellness industry reached $68 billion in 2004.

The "healthy coffee" market combines all three of these industries into one Great Cup of Coffee!

So, what is "Healthy coffee?" Healthy coffee is just great-tasting, black, Brazilian coffee that is mixed with Ganaderma, the "King" of the herbs. The Chinese name for Ganoderma is Lingzhi and in Japan this same herb is called Reishi.

By combining the second largest traded commodity on earth along with the benefits of Ganoderma (Red Mushroom), "healthy coffee" is quickly becoming the healthy beverage of choice!

One sector of this booming business is dominated by the MLM (multi-level marketing) companies. This marketing sector includes companies such as Gano Excel, Organo Gold, Serenigy, Javafit, Javita, Healthy Coffee and so on. Due to the structure of MLM in general, with 7 or 8 or more levels of commissions, sign-up bonuses, car programs and so on, the coffee products, to support all this, are priced sky-high. Coffee itself becomes secondary to the marketing plan and this explains the compulsive nature of recruitment that is found in the MLM "opportunity" meeting.

There is, as far as I know, only one company is offering Ganoderma coffee as part of an affiliate program with a sane yet handsome commission schedule.

Well, enough about that. Let me tell you something happened about two weeks ago. My weight dropped 4 pounds and has stayed there this past week, and I'm not even on a diet! How did this happen?

I started cutting down on my coffee-drinking recently while on a business trip to Sacramento and switched to a product from a company called Ganobrand that is known as "healthy coffee." By coincidence, and inadvertently and unintentionally, I lost 4 pounds that week, and I wasn't cutting down on my eating!

Ganoderma apparently has some properties that help with weight-loss in some way because I have lost 4 pounds, etc.

From my reading, Ganoderma contains over 150 nutrients.

Ganoderma Lucidum (Red Mushroom) has been prized over the centuries and dates back more than 4,000 years. Ancient generations realized Ganoderma provided them more vigor and energy, while reducing fatigue.

Ganoderma is said to be more powerful than Ginseng and has very low acid content.

There are several coffee products available and the most popular is the "2-in-1."

"2-in-1" means that there are two things in each coffee packet - coffee and Ganoderma and nothing else. The coffee is sold in boxes of single-serving packets, 20 or 30 packets to the box, and looks much like the Starbucks Via product.

There are also low caffeine products available. These are not decaffeinated but they achieve lower caffeine content by using less coffee in the mix. Typically, there are 50 mg of caffeine per serving in the low caffeine mix.

As far as I'm concerned, "healthy coffee" is a great product. I've been using it for about a month now and I've lost 4 pounds without changing my diet, which was completely unexpected! My entire mid-section seems to have "tightened up" and, to be frank, I'm more regular! In addition, remarks have been very positive coming back from the samples I've given out.

The above information has not been evaluated by the FDA. We do not claim that Ganoderma coffee products prevent, cure, treat, mitigate or diagnose any ailments or disease. We do not suggest that anyone should replace traditional medical treatment with our products. If you are under a physician's care, it is very important that you do not discontinue or reduce any prescription medication without first consulting your physician.

Healthy Alternatives - Do They Really Work - Why the Scepticism?

On Friday and Saturday my husband and I set up a booth at a vendor's year round market to introduce a natural health herb to people passing by. It is ironic that we are the very first booth before entering the double doors into the main market area and right beside us through a set of doors, is a major drug store. We are appalled at the number of sick looking people who pass by our booth and do not even look in our direction. Many of them have very sad and dejected looks on their faces and we know they are dealing with major health issues. They come out of the drug store loaded down with prescription drugs, hoping upon hope, that this is the answer to getting them feeling better so they can get their lives back to normal.

My question is this, why do North Americans wait until they are confronted with illness before they try to do something to correct the situation? Never before has the health care system been so taxed financially as it is right now. Lack of funding and government money is causing a problematic decline in health care and many people cannot even get a doctor when they are ill.

We now know so much more about the human body and how to keep it healthy. Today there are so many alternative health care products on the market that boost the immune system, detoxify the body and provide antioxidants and nutrients to fine tune our bodies. In the Orient people go to the doctor, not to get cured but to find ways to keep their bodies healthy. It is called Preventative Health Care! In this country the need to do this is more urgent than ever before. Just take for instance the obesity problem among our young people. When we put our bodies under stress from over eating it causes us to have escalating health problems. It is estimated Childhood obesity increased from 5 percent in 1964 to about 13 percent in 1994. Today, it is about 20 percent - and rising.

This report was released last March:
March 2010
Shortchanging America's Health
A State-by-State Look at How Public Health Dollars Are Spent

A March 2010 report from the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) found federal spending for public health has been flat for nearly five years, while states around the country cut nearly $392 million for public health programs in the past year. These cuts leave communities around the country struggling to deliver basic disease prevention and emergency health preparedness services.

So how does one learn to live healthier? With the increase of toxic chemicals in everything we eat from fresh, frozen and canned foods many people just decide to live life and take their chances that their constitution is strong enough to combat any negative consequences that may develop from an unbalanced diet. This is not a good option and we need to carefully analyze what we can do to become healthier and stay that way.

The Chinese herb Ganoderma Lucidum (Red Reishi) has been scientifically researched as a normalizing substance - a nutritional supplement that can yield medical benefits through its normalization and regulation of the body's organs and functions. The role of Red Reishi in maintaining a healthy lifestyle can best be explained through the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) point of view because none of the known active components taken alone is as more effective than the consumption of Reishi itself. Whereas Western medicine focuses on the "cure" after the disease has already occurred, TCM, established through over 2,000 years of human observation, focuses on disease prevention by sustaining the right balance within the body through proper nutrition, exercise, and meditation. Reishi is an important adaptogenic herb in TCM in helping the body maintain this balance and also restore the balance when one is sick.

My name is Joan and I have because of necessity, investigated healthy alternatives that could improve my failing health. More than 43 million children of preschool age worldwide are obese, and studies have shown that obesity could significantly impact children's health in later life. Now, researchers say that educating new mothers about healthy eating and active play can reduce the risk of their child being overweight or obese. The study is published in BMJ (British Medical Journal).

Researchers from the South Western Sydney & Sydney Local Health Districts and Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney in Australia, state that the most common factors that contribute to childhood obesity, especially in lower socio-economic groups, include: When children start eating solidsHow they are fedHow much television they watch (children aged 2-5 years old should watch no more than 60 minutes per day)In addition, it has been stated that obesity prevention should start earlier in life, as children who are overweight or obese are more likely to remain so in adulthood.

In this study, the researchers examined 667 first-time mothers and their infants. Specially trained community nurses delivering a staged home based intervention visited each participant at home eight times, once during the antenatal period and then again at 1, 3, 5, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months.

The nurses looked at how much time the children watched television and their feeding habits, as well as their body mass index (BMI).

Study participants were educated on healthy eating and exercise habits for their children. In addition, the nurses used the following intervention messages: Breast is bestNo solids for me until six monthsI eat a variety of fruit and vegetables everydayOnly water in my cupI am part of an active familyFor children aged 2 years, a healthy BMI is 14-18 for boys and 13-18 for girls. The researchers found that at 24 months, the mean BMI for children in the intervention group was 16.49 vs. 16.87 in the control group.

In addition, children in the control group were more likely to be overweight or obese (14.1%) at 24 months than those in the intervention group (11.2%).

The team found that children in the intervention group were considerably more likely to consume one or more servings of vegetables per day (89%) than those in the control group (83%). Furthermore, 72% of children in the control group were likely to be given food as a reward vs. 62% of those in the intervention group.

Although the researchers found no difference in the amount of fruit and junk food consumption and time spent outdoors, they did find that children in the control group were more likely to eat in front of the television (68%) than those in the intervention group (56%).

22% of children in the control group also watched more than 60 minutes of television vs. 14% of children in the intervention group.

Mothers in the intervention group were more likely to exercise for 150+ minutes per week (48%) than mothers in the control group (38%). In addition, mothers in the intervention group were also more likely to consume more than two servings of vegetables per day than those in the control group, 52% vs 36%, respectively.

According to the researchers, the study results are extremely encouraging and show that it is vital to set the foundation for lifelong learning, behavior and health outcomes in the first few years of a child's development. However, they state that further research is needed regarding the cost-effectiveness.

They researchers state that "early onset of childhood overweight and obesity requires health promotion programs to start as early as possible." In addition, they explain that these programs should be family focused and can help improve a child's weight status.

In an associated report, Professor Mary Rudolf from the University of Leeds, writes that the study raises important questions, such as if programs to fight obesity could be started even earlier. According to Rudolf, follow-up is "essential to see if the [study] results in a measurable reduction in obesity and morbidity."

Why People Drink Ganoderma Coffee - The Gano Healthy Coffee

Ganoderma coffee is known as gano healthy coffee because it combines the effects of normal coffee with the health benefits offered by Ganoderma Lucidum, a fungus of the mushroom family that is grown in China and Korea. Also known as Reishi and lingzhi, this fungus offers a large number of health benefits, and people drink it for exactly that reason.

There are a number of species of ganoderma that have been used in traditional Chinese and other Asian traditional medicine for many centuries, although it is on the Ganoderma Lucidum species that we are focusing on here in its specific usage with coffee to form the drink known as 'Gano healthy coffee'.

Reishi contains a number of terpenoids antioxidants along with polysaccharides and the trace mineral organic germanium, and the coffee it is used in as a delivery system contains a lower level of caffeine than standard ground coffee. In addition to its strong antioxidant properties, it is highly supportive of your immune system, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antidiabetic and helps to lower your blood pressure and reduce your blood cholesterol levels.

Add to that the strong antioxidant properties of regular coffee, and you have a potent healthy drink that thoroughly deserves the name bestowed on it of 'gano healthy coffee'. The fungus is generally accepted as one of the most highly respected medicinal mushrooms and is believed to be the oldest mushroom used in traditional medicine. It has been subject to many scientific analyses to determine its constituents, and also tested for its effectiveness in treating the medical conditions for which it has been widely acclaimed throughout the Orient.

Germanium is a mineral that enhances the oxygen uptake of your blood by over 50%, and it not only improves your circulation, but has been used to prevent pains in the legs and extremities during exercise. Healthy coffee with added Ganoderma offers an energy boost several times that of ginseng and similar herbs. People drink Ganoderma coffee for that and a number of other reasons. By combining low caffeine Brazilian coffee beans and Ganoderma Lucidum, you end up with a drink that offers all the benefits of real coffee without the side-effects of caffeine, along with the added benefits of Reishi.

Gano healthy coffee is one of the healthiest drinks you can consume, and the ideal solution for coffee drinkers that want all the health benefits without drinking excessive caffeine. You can give yourself a great energy boost without getting hooked and lying awake half the night and getting the caffeine shakes in the morning. The negatives of coffee are largely removed and replaced with the benefits of the Chinese magic mushroom!

The benefits of gano healthy coffee to your circulation and heart were briefly touched upon above but let's look at these in more detail. One of the properties of a strong antioxidant is its ability to destroy free radicals. These are small highly reactive oxidizing agents that are generated during the body's metabolism and cellular respiration, and also from exposure to pollutants such as traffic and industrial emissions, tobacco smoke and also to strong sunlight.

These free radicals, such as hydrogen peroxide and superoxide, oxidize the LDL cholesterol in your blood that then deposits on your arterial walls to form plaques of cholesterol that gradually build up to block your arteries. This causes strokes and heart attacks, each of which can be fatal. The antioxidants contained in coffee beans and in Ganoderma Lucidum destroy these free radicals and prevent this from happening. They can also lower your overall cholesterol levels, and the anti-inflammatory properties of gano healthy coffee help to overcome the inflammation that can lead to serious conditions such as some cancers, serious allergies and asthma.

The polysaccharides and triterpenes in Ganoderma help your liver to rid your body of toxins, and coffee drinkers in general have been found to suffer fewer liver problems that those that do not drink it. Your liver is your body's main detox plant, and the combination of the Reishi and coffee is a very powerful one in keeping your blood pure and free from unwanted toxins.

While both coffee and Ganoderma Lucidum are very powerful antioxidants, antitoxins and anti-inflammatories in their own rights, when combined they present a powerful cocktail of health-giving substances that has long been recognized as second to none in its effect on your liver, heart, blood and many other organs of the body.

Few would disagree that people drink Ganoderma coffee - the so-called gano healthy coffee - to help them live healthier and longer and the science of today certainly appears to support them in that use.

Further information on Gano Healthy Coffee can be found on http://www.healthy-gourmet-coffee.net where you will also find information on various other forms of coffee and also the coffee makers used to produce the perfect drink.
